Shhh... Trader Joe's kicks off Silent Movie Mondays at Paramount

Romance during the final days of the Russian Tsarist aristocracy, enjoyed from the comfort of the Paramount Theater: who could ask for more? Monday marks the return of Trader Joe's Silent Movie Mondays with the classic 1928 film The Tempest, starring John Barrymore. Barrymore plays a soldier who struggles to defy the class system of the Tsarist regime, and falls into the trap of love along the way.
The show begins Monday Jan. 23rd at 7pm; tickets are $10 and can be purchased here.

Hugo House “Cheap Wine and Poetry” kicks off 2012

If you've never attended one of these Hugo House events, it is worth a shot. There are no surprises; the title of the event is relatively self-explanatory. There is an optional donation at the door, but other than that, the evening is exactly what is expected: cheap wine (usually something like the Trader Joe's $3 Buck Chuck) is served while budding poets recite their work. As for the quality of the poetry, you be the judge; it ranges from would-be Rudyard Kiplings to those that make you want to puncture your eardrums and drown yourself in the $3 Buck Chuck.
The evening begins at 7pm on Thursday, Jan. 26th, but get there early if you want a seat. And dress in layers; as I remember, it gets pretty steamy in Hugo House;-)

You still have one more chance to see Pacific Northwest Ballet's All Wheeldon, a program in four parts with choreography by Christopher Wheeldon. The bill includes Carousel (A Dance),After the Rain pas de deux, Polyphonia, and Variations Sérieuses. From lively to dramatic to whimsical, All Wheeldon is truly a pleasure for ballet lovers and first-time attendees!

Art lovers and even art neophytes like myself should be sure to check out the Seattle Art Museum's Luminous: The Art of Asia exhibit, opening October 13th. The exhibit features a unique video art installation by renowned contemporary artist Do Ho Suh, along with 160 additional pieces complied from SAM's vast collection.

Don't miss the opening night lecture with SAM's Interim Assistant Curator of Asian Art Catherine Roche, where you can learn more about the pieces and the thoughts behind the selection process.

Interlaken Park

Interlaken Park is one of the most understated recreational areas in Seattle. Often overshadowed by the better known Volunteer Park in Capitol Hill, and the expansive Washington Park in the Broadmoor neighborhood, Interlaken Park sits just between these two off of East Galer Street and Interlaken Drive in the northern most part of Capitol Hill.
This park spans more than 50 acres and includes miles of hiking trails and bicycle paths which might challenge even experienced hikers. The trails are steep and wind quite a bit, offering Interlaken's visitors a rigorous workout.
Miniature canyons grace the trails, and towering trees provide shelter from the sun on warm summer days. One of the most remarkable things about Interlaken Park is that save for the faint chirping of small birds, the park is completely and utterly devoid of sound. Visitors can experience the beautiful and absolute quiet of the wilderness at Interlaken, which sits just three miles from busy downtown Seattle.

Seattle Center is home to a variety of attractions, festivals, and other events which take place year-round. The summer is Seattle Center's busiest season, as tourists and residents converge upon the campus to partake of its many enticements.One of the most appealing draws at the center is the International Fountain, located in the heart of the Seattle Center Campus. Children, adults, and even pets can enjoy the refreshing spray of the exuberant jets. The fountain is a delight not only for the eyes, but the ears as well, as music from around the world can be heard in accompaniment to the fountain's mist.

The Space Needle is one of Seattle's most well-known attractions. Built in 1961 for the 1962 World's Fair, the Space Needle was designed with a "Century 21/ Space Age" theme, from the detail of the structure to the colors chosen for the exterior.

Atop the Space Needle sits a revolving restaurant along with a 360 degree observation deck. Visitors who purchase tickets to the Needle can take a ride up to the top in the elevator, which travels at a speed of ten miles per hour. Tickets begin at $16.00 for adults, with discounts available for children, seniors, and military personnel. The Space Needle has become a beloved symbol of Seattle, and can be seen from most points within the city. It stands at 605 feet and is located near the east entry to the Seattle Center campus.

While Seattle Center is the home of the city's famous Space Needle, this towering symbol of the city is but one of many activities and attractions that the Seattle Center campus has to offer. Near the east entry to the Seattle Center campus, just steps from the Space Needle, lies the Peace Garden, filled with many types of flowers and plant life which change with the seasons.
The Peace Garden was created by Seattle Center staff in 1996 with the theme of peace and reflection in mind. It includes a peace pole as well as a conflict resolution table, which highlight the garden's theme.
Seattle Center lies in the heart of the city, and is bordered by the Belltown and Queen Anne neighborhoods. The campus is accessible via car or public transportation, specifically, the 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 13, or 16 bus.

Seafair Parade strides into Seattle!

The annual Seafair Torchlight Parade is held annually in July, much to the delight of Seattlelites and visitors alike. The traditional start time of the parade is around 7:00pm, but onlookers typically begin reserving their seats along the event's 4th Avenue route as early as twelve hours prior to the start of the festivities!

Organizations, businesses, and even animals take part in the event. A tradition in Seattle since 1950, the Torchlight Parade marks the culmination of a three-week long festival organized by the Seafair Foundation, a non-profit group which fortifies the local community with programs such as scholarships and mentorships.

West Seattle's Treasure... Alki Beach

On the shore of West Seattle sits Alki Beach, a two and a half mile stretch of sand and pebble bordering the Puget Sound.

The cool beach, gentle waves, and crisp air attract families from all over the Seattle area, and are quite popular with seagulls and in the summer months, even seal pups! Alki is a perfect spot for swimming, playing in the surf, or sunning on the beach.Alki Beach offers breathtaking views of the Olympic Mountain Range, as well as sparkling visions of the city and the Space Needle. Along Alki Avenue, beachgoers can find cafes and restaurants in which to take refuge from the day.

Alki Beach is the area of Seattle where the first European-American settlers landed in 1851. Chief Sealth of the Duwamish and Suquamish Tribes served as a mediator between the European settlers and the Native-American inhabitants.

Often a place of recreation where Seattleites choose to cool off in the summer, Alki Beach is open and can be enjoyed year-round. If you are seeking solace, you may want to visit Alki in autumn. Though considerably colder, the area is more peaceful and virtually devoid of crowds.
Alki Beach is accessible via car or public transportation, specifically the 56 and 37 bus.

Madison Beach Park

Madison Beach Park sits on the east shore of Seattle, on the border of Lake Washington. The park, though not large in acreage, boasts a grassy area for picnics, a children's playground, a sandy beach, and a supervised diving board where swimmers can show off their skills. Though Madison Beach Park is more popular in the summer months when Seattleites can take full advantage of the water and beach access, during the cooler times of the year one can still enjoy spectacular views of Lake Washington. The park is accessible via car or public transportation, specifically the 11 bus.

July 4th Fireworks at Gasworks Park!

Thousands of Seattleites converged on (and around) Gasworks Park last night for an annual fireworks spectacular! These shots were taken around 10:00pm from an area overlooking Lake Union, just about a half mile from the park.

The creative display was set to music and was the main fireworks event in Seattle this year.

People from all over Seattle made their way to Fremont this weekend for the annual Fremont Fair. Food vendors and retailers got to show off their wares to thousands of visitors. Exploring Volunteer Park

Home to the Seattle Asian Art Museum, the historic water tower, an outstanding conservatory, two reflecting pools, a reservoir, and acres of land filled with grass, trees, and a variety of flowers and plants, Volunteer Park is one of Seattle's most beloved recreational areas. Pictured above is the water tower, and what cannot be seen in the photo is the hidden path leading to the tower's entrance. Once inside, visitors can mount the staircase which leads up to the tower's observation deck. The deck offers 360 degree views of Seattle and surrounding areas.

Situated between the Seattle Asian Art Museum and the reservoir are two reflecting pools where large goldfish swim beneath lilypads and water flowers.
Built in 1912, the Volunteer Park Conservatory houses more than 600 varieties of flowers, according to the city's website. The conservatory is situated on the north end of the park and is free to the public.
The Seattle Asian Art Museum, or SAAM, sits near the eastern entrance to the park. It houses rotating collections of Asian art from various countries and time periods. Admission to the museum is $7.00 for adults, but is free to the public on the first Thursday of each month. Volunteer Park was developed by the city just before the turn of the century. It spans 48 acres and is located in northern Capitol Hill. It is accessible via the 10 bus.

Washington Park Arboretum

Nestled in the Northeast corner of Seattle, just South of the University District, lies the lush, green expanse of Washington Park Arboretum. The park spans 230 acres and is home to more than 20,000 trees, vines, and shrubs, 139 of which are endangered species, according to the arboretum's website.

Visitors can find numerous hiking trails throughout the park. Washington Park Arboretum is open to the public every day. Fully guided walking tours are available, and are given at no charge on the first and third Sunday of each month. The arboretum is also home to Seattle's Japanese Garden. Admission to the garden is $5.00, and pets are not permitted in the garden.

Discover Discovery Park...

Seattle is an exciting city, filled with restaurants, coffee shops, highrises, bookshops, and boutiques. But just five miles from downtown is a vast wilderness in which city dwellers can shed their urban armor and hike, explore, picnic, and frolic on the beach. At just over 534 acres, Discovery Park is the largest city park in Seattle. It is situated northeast of Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood, and borders the Puget Sound.
Discovery Park is home to lush meadows, a variety of foliage and towering trees, hiking trails, and a white, sandy beach. On weekends, one can find families brazing the trails, pet-lovers with playful canine companions in tow, bicyclists riding the paths, picnickers enjoying an afternoon lunch in the sun, and beach lovers tanning and enjoying the surf.

Discovery Park is open to the public year-round. It can be accessed via car or bus routes 24 or 33. You can learn more about the park by visiting the City of Seattle's website.

Beginning tonight, the Pacific Northwest Ballet presents Kent Stowell's Swan Lake. Swan Lake tells the story of the impossible love between a prince and a beautiful young woman who has been cursed to take the form of a swan. Tickets range from $25.00 up to $155.00. Tomorrow night at the Seattle Central Library, MAD Magazine's Joe Raiola will speak on the "Joys of Censorship" (only a slightly sarcastic title). Raiola will discuss various hot First Amendment issues and touch upon the history of MAD Magazine and comic book censorship. The event begins Friday at 7:00 pm in the Microsoft Auditorium at 1000 1st Avenue.

On Monday, mountaineer Peter Athans shares his experiences in National Geographic Live! The Secrets of Shangri-La at Benaroya Hall. Athans will discuss his recent exploration of the Himalayan kingdom of Mustang and his uncovery of a 55 panel mural dating from the 13th century which is helping historians understand the spread of Buddhism. The event begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets start at $20.00.

Screening of Rick Steves' Iran

Abdi Sami spoke to a packed house at the Ballard Library today following a special screening of Rick Steves' Iran. Sami co-produced the documentary which deals with the culture and people of Iran. Steves, who hosts and produces a long-running travel/culture documentary series entitled Rick Steves' Europe, decided to leave politics out of the mix and get in touch with the human side of Iran. Popular sentiment among the Iranian people, at least those interviewed in the documentary, indicated a fondness for the people of the United States, and an awareness that the conflict which exists is one between governments, not people.

If you weren't able to attend the screening, you can buy Rick Steves' Iran on DVD or catch it on KCTS 9 this Wednesday at 9:00pm.

KCTS kicks off upcoming series

Last night, hundreds gathered at SIFF Cinema to get a sneak preview of the upcoming PBS series "We Shall Remain." The five-part documentary series focuses on how Native Americans have dealt with the challenges and injustices presented to them, centering specifically on the period from the 1620's to the 1970's.

The episode presented last night was titled "Wounded Knee;" it dealt with the 1973 siege of the town called Wounded Knee in South Dakota and with the United States' government's response to it. The presentation was particularly moving and even shocking with regard to just how recent and continuing lawful injustices against Native American culture exist.

After the screening, actor and long-time Native American Rights activist Russell Means, along with the series' Executive Producer Sharon Grimberg and episode co-producer Juliana Brannum, fielded questions from the audience, which touched upon the boarding school phenomenon and chronic suppression of Native American traditions and culture in the U.S. Of immersion, Means said, "We are at the cusp of extinction because we're not permitted to know our languages." Means played a large part in the real-life Wounded Knee and also appeared in the film.

Seattle hosts Green Festival

This weekend, hundreds of speakers and exhibitors from throughout the country will come to Seattle to participate in the Green Festival. The event will include workshops, lectures and forums about how people can work together to lessen their environmental impact and create a greener community.

Speakers will include Seattle's own Bus Chick Carla Saulter, GRIT TV host Laura Flanders, environmental activist Dune Lankard, and a host of others. Many local businesses will also be on hand to demonstrate their commitment to green practices, sustainability and fair trade.

The event takes place tomorrow from 10:00am-7:00pm and Sunday from 11:00am-6:00pm at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center at 800 Convention Place (at Pike Street). Tickets are $15.00 for regular admission, or $10.00 for seniors, students, and bus riders with a valid transfer or bus pass. Created by Tim Etchells and enacted by a group of kids between the ages of eight and fourteen, That Night Follows Day is a truly unusual collection of stories depicting the ways in which adults, both purposely and unknowingly, shape the minds of their children. You can catch the show, which is making its U.S. premier, at On the Boards located at 100 W. Roy Street in Queen Anne, with performances tonight as well as tomorrow afternoon and evening.

On Monday, March 23rd and Tuesday, March 24th, National Geographic Live!, in conjunction with KCTS 9, continues its lecture series at Benaroya Hall with world renowned photojournalist and explorer Jim Richardson. Richardson will discuss his Celtic voyage through Scotland, Ireland, and his return to his Celtic roots. Tickets are available now and begin at $18.00, with discounts available for students.

And don't forget about the Broadway Comes to Broadway Bound benefit cabaret happening this Monday evening. I'm not sure if this is something new, but it's news to me! The Seattle Public Library offers an online service called NoveList Plus which can assist you in finding new books to read. The database includes searchable book reviews, discussions and recommendations. It includes both fiction and non-fiction titles.

Barrett, Fortenberry and more to perform in Seattle!

If you are a theater buff, you must mark your calendar for the evening of March 23rd. That's when Brent Barrett, Philip Fortenberry, Bill Nolte and several other big names on Broadway will be right here in Seattle to perform at the Broadway Comes to Broadway Bound cabaret event that will benefit the Broadway Bound Children's Theatre.

The aforementioned entertainers, along with Anne Allgood, John Treacy Egan, Jerry Dixon and Rebecca Spencer, will perform some very noteable numbers from both classic and recent Broadway shows. If you liked Barrett in Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular, or Nolte in The Producers, chances are you will enjoy this show.

In addition to Broadway's stars, some of Seattle's own young stars-to-be will perform at the cabaret as well.

Broadway Bound Children's Theatre is a program which provides training and support to young actors (children of all skill levels). Professional instructors offer guidance and support in a structured and enjoyable environment. Broadway Bound's productions take place year round, often with several casts in order to include as many children as possible. Summer camps and classes are offered as well. Last year, the theatre served more than one-thousand youth in Seattle. The program was started nearly thirteen years ago by performer Jimmy Nixon.

The cabaret will take place at the Broadway Performance Hall in Capitol Hill. Tickets to the show are priced at $75.00, or $125.00 for a pair. with the Seattle Central Library! Not only is this facility architecturally beautiful, but oh, the books! Floors and floors filled with reading material. The third floor even has a "living room" where patrons are encouraged to relax and check out the latest fiction. And what pairs better with a book than a cup of hot coffee? Yes, this library even has a cafe. Could anything be more perfect?

The tenth floor of the library has some spectacular viewpoints. And there is an entire section dedicated to our city; it is appropriately called "The Seattle Room."

The green escalators transport patrons between the 1st, 3rd and 4th floors.

Starting tonight, SIFF Cinema presents Ben X. Based on a novel written by Nic Balthazar, the film centers around the life and imagination of a slightly autistic teenager, a social misfit who is determined to rid himself of the Image Courtesy SIFF Cinema bullies who plague him. It's showing nightly through March 5th, with matinees on the weekend. Admission is $10.00.

In mainstream theater, the movie Two Lovers, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow and Vinessa Shaw, opens tonight in Seattle. Following a traumatic heartbreak, a man moves back to his hometown of Brooklyn, New York. While still nursing his broken Image Courtesy Magnolia Pictures heart, he meets two very different women whom he must eventually choose between.

Books/Poetry

Tonight, U.S. born Iranian-American journalist and author Azadeh Moaveni will read from her new book, Honeymoon in Tehran: Two Years of Love and Danger in Iran, at the Elliott Bay Book Company. In this work, the author depicts life in Tehran through first-person encounters and sociopolitical observations. The reading begins at 7:30pm at 101 South Main Street. Admission is free.

Art

If you haven't seen it already, this weekend is your last chance to experience "Edward Hopper's Women" at the Seattle Art Museum. The exhibit ends on Sunday. Admission is $15.00.

Solace in Seattle: Kinnear Park in Queen Anne

Though quite pretty, with tall trees and wide spreads of grass, Kinnear Park is perhaps not the best place to take solace in the city. The park is adjacent to where West Mercer Place and Elliott Avenue merge, and it's unfortunate location creates a displeasing experience for both the eye and the ear.

Though it may not be suitable for taking solace, the park itself is lovely and would be a great setting for a short hike!

Pugetopolis - Book Discussion

If you have entered a bookstore or opened up a newspaper in the past couple of months, chances are that you have heard of this book, and have invariably heard of its author, Knute Berger. Seattle native and long-time writer-about-town, Berger has made his mark on the Puget Sound area with his insightful and sometimes scathing predictions about the region’s future.

Whether or not you are a fan of Berger’s opinions, you must admit that Pugetopolis is indeed an interesting read. In the first chapter, Berger discusses the implications of the region's massive growth, writing: "As Pugetopolis gobbles the countryside, we salute what we have displaced with a whimsy that masks a grim reality."
As I have lived in Seattle for only a brief time, perhaps it is not fair for me to comment on this, but I must say that I see Berger’s point of view. I am originally from New York. Some of the things which drew me to Seattle were the positive similarities to NY, such as the emphasis on arts, music, literature, the political attitudes, and the convenience of city life.
While New York is a great city, there are many drawbacks to living there. For one, New York is densely overcrowded, and this extends well beyond the city limits into the suburbs of Long Island, the once semi-rural areas of lower upstate New York, and even into New Jersey. The cost of living in New York or even in reasonable commutable distance to the city is astronomical. And the areas of natural beauty that remain are extremely scarce.
It is frightening to read Berger’s predictions about the Puget Sound region’s future, but perhaps that is the path we are on. What do you think; do you agree with Berger? Is Seattle (along with the surrounding region) doomed to become a cookie-cutter, overcrowded metropolis unless we change our ways?
What about his stance on public versus private transportation? I am a big advocate of walking and taking public transit, especially in Seattle where it is relatively easy to do so. Does this issue strike a chord with you? Are there other points in Pugetopolis about which you feel strongly, such as the "greening of Seattle?"

Pugetopolis author and local celebrity Knute Berger will kick up some controversy tonight at Seattle's Town Hall. He and award-winning author and journalist Timothy Egan are set to debate the Puget Sound region's present and future. The event begins at 7:30pm; tickets are $5.00 and can be purchased at the door beginning one hour prior.

Yes, it's almost the weekend, and you know what that means... only one day until fierce yo-yo spinners from all over the Northwestern United States descend upon Seattle Center! The 2009 Northwest Yo-Yo Championships will take place tomorrow at the Center House. Registration for participants starts at 10:00am, with the games to begin shortly thereafter. You can see the full schedule here. Admission is free.

If you're in the mood for a movie, check out Lola Montes at SIFF Cinema. Originally produced in 1955 and later restored, the film characterizes the life of a beautiful young dancer as depicted through a series of flashbacks. The showing starts tonight at 7:30 and runs daily through Thursday. Tickets are $10.00, with student discounts available.

On a higher note, Seattle Opera's production of Bluebeard's Castle with Erwartung opens tomorrow at McCaw Hall. Two tales of darkness, love and the forbidden regions of the subconscious come together. Tickets start at $25.00. Solace in Seattle: Denny Park

Along the boundary where Belltown meets South Lake Union lies a beautiful oasis of lush green grass, tall trees, and relative quiet. It's called Denny Park. One of the unique characteristics of this park is that it is accessible via multiple (I believe six in total) entrances. The park is framed by Dexter Avenue, Denny Way, 9th Avenue and John Street. Denny Park is the perfect place to sit and relax amidst the chaos that is Denny Way.
The park's history dates back to the late 1800's. The land was donated by pioneer David Thomas Denny and his wife, Louisa Boren. It was originally dedicated as a cemetery, and later converted to a public park. You can learn more about the background of Denny Park here. Seattle Native Wins Grammy

Composer Mateo Messina has been honored for his score in the movie Juno; the West Seattle native won the grammy for "Best Compilation Soundtrack." According to his publicists, Messina's work varies from writing movie and television soundtracks to creating pieces for live concerts.
Messina is the founder and president of the Symphony Guild, a local organization which produces an annual concert to benefit uncompensated care at Seattle Children's Hospital. Though Messina now resides in Hollywood, he frequently returns to Seattle to perform for children at the hospital, as well as to write and produce the annual concert. This year's performance, Symphony of the Superhero, is scheduled to take place in November at Benaroya Hall.

Well, the day many of you have been hoping for and/or dreading is almost here. Yes, tomorrow is Valentine's Day 2009. If you find yourself alone this Valentine's Day, don't just sit home and brood. Here are some suggestions for what you can do this weekend - regardless of your relationship status.

Tonight, Siff Cinema presents Deadline USA, starring Humphrey Bogart. It's an old-school drama that revolves around the politics of the newspaper business. The show starts at 7:00pm. Tickets are $10.00.

Here's an event which is sure to make you slightly uncomfortable - watching a pair of octopi consumate their relationship. Yes, it's that time of year - Octopus Week at the Seattle Aquarium. And what more bizarre way is there to celebrate Valentine's Day than to watch two octopi go on a blind date? To quote the Aquarium's site: "Aquarium biologists set the mood with decorative hearts, roses and romantic music at the Octopus Exhibit. But it’s up to the octopuses to decide whether or not love is in the water!" The "date" begins at noon on Saturday, Feb. 14th. Admission is $16.00 (adults), $10.50 (kids). This weekend Seattle Center presents Festival Sundiata; the event will take place Sat. 2/14 & Sun. 2/15 from 12:00-8:00pm. The festival celebrates African and African-American culture through dance and song. Admission is free.

The Cold Cold Ground will be playing at Rendezvous' Jewelbox Theater tonight at 10:30pm. Rendezvous is located at 2322 2nd Avenue in Belltown. Cover charge is $5.00 (age 21+).

Tomorrow and Sunday, if you happen to be in the area of Pioneer Square, be sure to check out the eighth annual Seattle Print Fair. Davidson Galleries, located at 313 Occidental Avenue South, will host the exhibit of prints, dating from the 16th century through the present. All works are available for purchase; the exhibit is free and open to the public on Saturday from 10am-6pm and Sunday from 11am-5pm.

This Sunday, if you are lucky enough to live in West Seattle or if you don't mind making the trek to the West Seattle Public Library, you can get a glimpse of the Seattle Opera's upcoming productions, "Bluebeard's Castle" and "Erwartung." The preview will take place Sunday at 2:00pm. Admission is free.

Solace in Seattle: Counterbalance Park on Queen Anne Avenue North

Counterbalance Park in the Queen Anne neighborhood begs many questions; the first is: what is a park? I would define a park as an area of natural beauty where one is able to sit and admire one's surroundings. Counterbalance Park is more of a concrete and gravel courtyard with benches and pretty lights; I move that we rename it "Counterbalance Courtyard." However, once we get past the name of this space, we can appreciate it for what it is. Counterbalance Park is a nice little area where one can sit and observe the goings on around lower Queen Anne Hill, or get lost in thought while admiring the dazzling light display.

An austere looking concrete courtyard by day, Counterbalance comes alive at night with technicolor illumination.

According to Seattle Parks and Recreation, Counterbalance was the result of three years of planning, and officially opened in July 2008.

Yes, that is a corny title for a post, but it is true. Take a look at this line of people waiting to see the premiere of the movie at AMC Theaters - Pacific Place in downtown Seattle. The line wrapped around the entire tier of the level where the theater is located, and then doubled back about halfway around. Unfortunately, many of us did not make the cutoff point. I did not realize that this movie had generated such a buzz in the city... or are many of us just eager for a free evening out?

The film officially opens in theaters this Friday.

Dragon Dancing into the New Year...

Hundreds of Seattleities gathered yesterday in the Chinatown-International District to help usher in the Year of the Ox. And what more festive way to commemorate the Lunar New Year than with a dragon dance?

Traditionally, dragons are a symbol of power; the dragon dance symbolizes the ending of one year and the driving away of bad luck, and welcomes a new year, good fortune and a fresh start.(*1) In China, the Lunar New Year is a highly regarded holiday, celebrated with colorful fireworks and traditional dances. The day emphasizes renewal, the ushering in of good fortune, and familial gatherings.

Seattle Celebrates the Presidential Inauguration

This morning, Seattleites flocked to the many Inaugural Viewing Events being held at various locations throughout the city. It seemed as if no one wanted to miss this historic Presidential Inauguration, even if it meant taking the day off from work.

At Seattle Center, crowds celebrated the induction of Barack Obama into office as he officially became the nation's 44th President. He took the oath with much needed talk of change and hope.

Though not happening this weekend, two important days are coming up just following the weekend.

On Monday January 19th, the country celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I am learning that this day is of special significance to Seattle, as our county is named after Dr. King.
Beginning at noon on the 19th, Seattle Center honors Dr. King's memory with a full afternoon of entertainment, awards and activities. The festivities are set to take place at the Center House in Seattle Center, 305 Harrison Street. In addition, many consider MLK Day a day of service/call to action, which may be used to take an interest in improving one's community or getting involved in human rights. Here is a link to Seattle area volunteer opportunities.

January 20th marks the day many of us have been waiting for since November 4th. There are several arena of which I am aware that will be holding Presidential Inauguration viewing events:

Olympic Sculpture Park on Western Ave. & Broad St.

It was quite cloudy and just beginning to rain when I took these photographs, but I am glad I went anyway. The Olympic Sculpture Park is quite beautiful and oddly peaceful, despite its location. (It is situated near several major roads.) I intend to go back on a clear - or at least partially sunny - day so that I can fully appreciate its beauty. The park is free and is open to everyone (and their leashed pets). It opens thirty minutes before the sunrise and closes thirty minutes after sunset.

Winter Solstice Fire Festival at Seattle Center

The Winter Solstice Fire Festival took place at Seattle Center this past weekend, January 10th and 11th. I believe it was originally scheduled to be held in December, but was postponed due to weather. The show was pretty spectacular; fire artists performed to techno music while skaters whisked around them. Below is a brief video taken on Saturday.

Seattle Center will be hosting a Winterfest Solstice Fire Festival featuring fire, performances and sculptures. It's happening Saturday, January 10th and Sunday January 11th from 4:00-9:00pm at the International Fountain/Fisher Pavilion Lawn area in Seattle Center. I'm not sure what to expect, but it sounds interesting.

I have just relocated to Belltown, in the heart of the city, and am looking forward to a year filled with excitement.
