Dragon Dancing into the New Year...

Hundreds of Seattleities gathered yesterday in the Chinatown-International District to help usher in the Year of the Ox. And what more festive way to commemorate the Lunar New Year than with a dragon dance?

Traditionally, dragons are a symbol of power; the dragon dance symbolizes the ending of one year and the driving away of bad luck, and welcomes a new year, good fortune and a fresh start.(*1) In China, the Lunar New Year is a highly regarded holiday, celebrated with colorful fireworks and traditional dances. The day emphasizes renewal, the ushering in of good fortune, and familial gatherings.
